## The Wedding That Begins the Ramayana
Vivah Panchami marks the day Sri Ram and Mata Sita were married at Janakpur, an event that begins one of the most beloved stories in the world. In Ayodhya — Ram's home city, the city to which the bridegroom returned with his bride — the festival is celebrated with the warmth of a family wedding rather than the grandeur of a state event.
It falls on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, usually in late November or early December.
## Why It Matters
Where Ram Navami celebrates Ram's birth and Diwali celebrates his return, Vivah Panchami celebrates the moment that gave the Ramayana its heart — the union of dharma and bhakti, of king and devotee, of Purusha and Prakriti. Married couples observe the day for marital harmony. Unmarried devotees observe it as a prayer for a virtuous partner. Families simply enjoy the gentleness of a wedding being relived through ritual.
## Where the Festival Lives in Ayodhya
Three sites carry the festival's main rituals:
- **Kanak Bhawan** — the spiritual home of Ram and Sita as a married couple. The temple is decorated as a bridal chamber and the murtis are dressed in wedding finery.
- **Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir** — special abhishek and shringar of Ram Lalla, with elaborate floral decoration.
- **The bypass route to Janakpur** — a symbolic baraat is sometimes sent from Ayodhya towards Janakpur in Nepal, where the wedding originally took place.
Smaller observances take place at Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, and many of the ashrams along the Ram Path.
## The Rhythm of the Day
A traditional Vivah Panchami in Ayodhya unfolds like this:
- **Pre-dawn** — Mangala Aarti at Ram Janmabhoomi, with the murti dressed in white and gold
- **Early morning** — Akhand Ramayana paath begins at Kanak Bhawan
- **Mid-morning** — special shringar of the Ram-Sita murtis as bride and bridegroom
- **Afternoon** — readings from the Bal Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, focusing on the wedding episode
- **Evening** — a ceremonial mock wedding (vivah utsav) is performed with full traditional rituals — kanyadan, mangal phera, and the exchange of garlands
- **Night** — bhajan and kirtan sessions, often continuing till midnight
Many devotees take a vrat (fast) until the evening ceremony.
## The Vivah Utsav
The ceremonial wedding at Kanak Bhawan is performed by senior pandits with the same formality as a real Hindu wedding. The Ram murti is brought forward as the groom, the Sita murti as the bride, and the entire sequence of vows is enacted. Devotees stand around the mandap as the wedding family.
For many devotees, this hour is the most moving experience of the year. The Ramayana lifts off the page and becomes a living event.
## Customs and Vows
- **Sankalp for marital harmony**: couples often take a vow together at Kanak Bhawan and tie a sacred thread
- **A handwritten verse from the Ramcharitmanas**: pilgrims write a verse from the wedding episode and place it at the temple
- **Annadan**: feeding pilgrims, a beloved tradition on this day
- **Bridal offerings**: married women bring red bangles, vermilion, and a small piece of cloth as offerings
## What to Wear
- Red, pink, or saffron are the traditional colours for the day
- Married women often dress as if attending a real wedding
- Men wear kurta-pyjama or a simple sherwani
## Crowds and Logistics
Vivah Panchami draws far fewer crowds than Ram Navami or Deepotsav, which makes it one of the most rewarding times to visit Ayodhya. Expect:
- A 40 — 60 minute darshan queue at Ram Janmabhoomi
- A 20 — 30 minute wait at Kanak Bhawan
- Comfortable weather, with cool evenings
- Easy hotel availability if booked 4 — 6 weeks in advance
For first-time visitors who want to experience an Ayodhya festival without the intensity of the major ones, Vivah Panchami is an ideal choice.
## Combining the Trip
A 3-night plan around Vivah Panchami works beautifully:
- **Day 1** — arrival, Sarayu Aarti, evening at Hanuman Garhi
- **Day 2** — full Vivah Panchami at Ram Janmabhoomi and Kanak Bhawan
- **Day 3** — Nageshwar Nath, Tulsi Smarak Bhawan, departure
If you have an extra day, a short trip to Nandigram — where Bharat lived during Ram's exile — adds an emotional thread to the festival.
## For NRI Devotees
A Vivah Panchami sankalp puja can be performed in your name at Kanak Bhawan with video attendance. Many of our NRI couples request this puja on their wedding anniversary, treating the day as a renewal of vows in front of Ram and Sita. The prasad — a red thread, vermilion, and a small piece of cloth from the shringar — is shipped to your home as a keepsake of the ceremony.
