## The Timeless Ritual of Ganga Aarti Every evening, as the sun dips below the horizon, the ancient ghats of Varanasi come alive with the mesmerising Ganga Aarti ceremony. This sacred ritual has been performed without interruption for centuries, honouring the holy River Ganga. ## Where to Watch The most grand Ganga Aarti takes place at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Seven priests perform the ceremony simultaneously, creating a spectacular display of fire, incense, and devotional chanting. Other ghats that host aarti ceremonies include Assi Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat, each with their own unique atmosphere. ## Timing The evening aarti typically begins at sunset, around 6:30 PM in winter and 7:00 PM in summer. Arriving thirty to forty-five minutes early is recommended to secure a good viewing spot. ## From the Water One of the most magical ways to experience the aarti is from a boat on the Ganga. The sight of the illuminated ghats reflected in the water, combined with the sound of bells and chanting, creates an unforgettable atmosphere. ## Cultural Etiquette - Maintain silence during the prayer portions of the ceremony - Ask permission before photographing individual priests or devotees - Dress modestly as this is a sacred ceremony - Small offerings of flowers and diyas can be placed in the river after the ceremony ## Morning Aarti While the evening ceremony receives more attention, the morning aarti at sunrise offers a more intimate and contemplative experience. The quiet of dawn, the mist over the river, and the gentle chanting create a deeply peaceful atmosphere. ## Combining with Other Experiences We recommend combining the aarti experience with a morning boat ride the following day, a visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and a walk through the ancient lanes of the old city.
