Kashmir to Ladakh Himalayan Odyssey

10 Days / 9 NightsKashmir, Ladakh2-12 persons

Overview

The journey begins where the Kashmir valley is at its most languid — on the still waters of Dal Lake, among the shikaras and the cool green terraces of the Mughal gardens — and ends amid the wind-scoured ridgelines of Ladakh, where prayer flags fray against a cobalt sky. Between the two lies one of the great overland drives of the Himalaya: the historic Srinagar-Leh highway, a ribbon of tarmac and gravel that climbs from orchard country over the Zoji La pass and unspools across a high desert of ochre cliffs, gompa-crowned hills and rivers the colour of turquoise.

Over ten days you cross this threshold slowly and deliberately, as the altitude demands. From Srinagar you ascend through Sonmarg and Drass — among the coldest inhabited places on earth — pausing at the Kargil War Memorial before the road delivers you to Leh. Ancient monasteries mark the way: the rock-cut Maitreya at Mulbekh, the moonland cliffs of Lamayuru, and the terraced halls of Thiksey and Hemis above the Indus. Beyond Leh the route reaches further still — over Khardung La to the dunes of Nubra, and across the Changthang plateau to the shifting blues of Pangong Tso.

This is scenic and adventurous travel rather than pilgrimage, yet the mountains keep their own reverence and we travel in their rhythm. A private vehicle and a seasoned driver carry you throughout, acclimatisation is built into the pace, and oxygen and first-aid support travel with you — so that the road, however grand, remains a pleasure rather than an ordeal.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every day is thoughtfully planned to balance spiritual depth with comfortable pacing.

Arrive in the Kashmir valley at around 1,585 metres and settle into the unhurried rhythm of Srinagar, with the afternoon given to Dal Lake and its Mughal-era gardens.

  • Warm welcome and transfer from Srinagar airport to your moored houseboat
  • Time to rest and take in the lake from the timber deck
  • Leisurely shikara ride across Dal Lake, past floating gardens and lotus beds
  • Visit the terraced Mughal gardens - Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi
  • Optional stroll through the old city's craft lanes and spice bazaars
  • Kashmiri dinner and overnight aboard the houseboat

A dramatic drive of about 200 kilometres (7-8 hours) leaves the green valley behind, climbing over the Zoji La pass at roughly 3,528 metres and on through Drass to Kargil at around 2,676 metres.

  • Early breakfast and departure up the valley to Sonmarg, the meadow of gold
  • Ascend the switchbacks of the Zoji La, the storied gateway between Kashmir and Ladakh
  • Pause at Drass, counted among the coldest inhabited places on earth
  • Pay quiet respects at the Kargil War Memorial below Tiger Hill
  • Follow the Suru river through changing high-desert landscapes to Kargil
  • Check in, dinner and overnight in Kargil

The longest and most storied leg of the highway - some 215 kilometres over 8-9 hours - threads a chain of monasteries and geological wonders before reaching Leh at around 3,500 metres.

  • Morning halt at Mulbekh to see the giant rock-cut Maitreya Buddha carved into the cliff face
  • Explore Lamayuru, its whitewashed gompa perched above the eroded moonland hills
  • Visit the ancient temples and delicate wall paintings of Alchi beside the Indus
  • Experience the optical curiosity of Magnetic Hill
  • Stop at Sangam, where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet in two distinct colours
  • A still moment at Gurudwara Pathar Sahib before arriving in Leh
  • Dinner and overnight in Leh

A gentler day at around 3,500 metres to let the body adjust to the thin mountain air, with easy visits to Leh's landmarks and viewpoints.

  • A slow morning to aid acclimatisation, with plenty of water and rest
  • Climb to the nine-storey Leh Palace overlooking the old town
  • Visit the white-domed Shanti Stupa for a sweeping view of the valley
  • Reflect at the Hall of Fame, the museum honouring the Indian Army
  • Unhurried evening at Sindhu Ghat on the banks of the Indus
  • Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight

A full day among the great gompas of the Indus valley, from royal Shey to the hilltop grandeur of Thiksey and the treasures of Hemis.

  • Morning at Shey, the old summer palace and its copper-gilt Buddha
  • Ascend Thiksey Monastery, its tiered halls often likened to the Potala of Lhasa
  • Time the visit, where possible, for the monks' resonant morning prayer
  • Drive on to Hemis, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh
  • Pass the Druk Padma Karpo (Rancho) School made famous on film
  • Return to Leh for dinner and overnight

Cross Khardung La at approximately 5,359 metres, one of the world's highest motorable passes, and descend into the desert-and-dunes of the Nubra valley.

  • An early start for the long climb to Khardung La
  • A brief photo stop at the pass amid fluttering prayer flags
  • Descend gradually to the Nubra valley and Diskit village
  • Visit Diskit Monastery and its towering Maitreya statue watching over the valley
  • Ride Bactrian camels among the silver sand dunes of Hunder
  • Dinner and overnight in a Nubra camp or guesthouse

A rugged cross-country drive follows the Shyok river directly to the shores of Pangong Tso at around 4,350 metres, sparing the long backtrack to Leh.

  • Depart Nubra along the winding Shyok river valley
  • Traverse remote hamlets and wide-open high-desert country
  • First glimpse of Pangong Tso, its waters shifting between deep blue and green
  • Time to walk the pebbled shoreline and photograph the lake
  • Watch sunset settle over the water as the far peaks turn to gold
  • Overnight in lakeside camps at Pangong

Turn back towards Leh over the mighty Chang La at about 5,360 metres, crossing the wind-swept Changthang plateau, a drive of some 5-6 hours.

  • A quiet sunrise by the lake before departing
  • Cross the high grasslands of the Changthang, grazing ground of nomads and their pashmina goats
  • Ascend Chang La, among the highest passes on the entire route
  • Keep watch for marmots and, with luck, the kiang or Tibetan wild ass
  • Descend past Sakti and Shakti villages back into the Indus valley
  • Arrive Leh for dinner and overnight

A free day in Leh to slow the pace, shop and savour the town, or to add an optional excursion further afield.

  • An unhurried morning with breakfast at leisure
  • Wander the Leh bazaar for pashmina, dried apricots and Ladakhi handicrafts
  • Linger over coffee in one of the town's welcoming rooftop cafes
  • Optional day excursion, such as the Sham valley or a monastery you may have missed
  • Last-minute sights and gentle packing
  • Farewell dinner and overnight in Leh

The odyssey closes with an early transfer to Leh airport and your onward departure, the mountains at your back.

  • Early breakfast at the hotel, subject to your flight timing
  • A moment to reflect on the crossing from the Kashmir valley to the roof of Ladakh
  • Assisted transfer to Leh (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee) airport
  • Fond farewell and the close of Namami Spiritual Yatra services

Frequently Asked Questions

Much of Ladakh sits above 3,500 metres and the passes climb beyond 5,300 metres, so acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a genuine consideration. Our itinerary is paced deliberately, with a dedicated acclimatisation day in Leh before any high pass, and a portable oxygen cylinder travels in the vehicle. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy exertion for the first two days, and tell your driver-guide at once if you feel breathless, giddy or persistently headachy. Travellers with serious heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before booking.

The Nubra valley, Pangong Tso and the Khardung La and Chang La sectors lie in protected border areas that require an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange on your behalf as part of the package. Indian travellers should carry an original government photo identity card (Aadhaar or passport) along with copies; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and must share passport details at the time of booking. Please keep several photocopies handy, as permits are checked at multiple points along the road.

The Srinagar-Leh highway is a summer road. It typically opens once the Zoji La is cleared of snow, and the season runs from around late May or early June to late September. July and August offer the most reliable conditions and the greenest Kashmir valley, while June and September are quieter with crisper light. Through winter the road is closed, as heavy snow seals the high passes.

Connectivity is limited and thins the further you travel from the towns. Only postpaid SIM cards work in Ladakh - prepaid cards issued elsewhere will not connect - and Jio, Airtel and BSNL give the most dependable signal in Leh and Kargil. Nubra and Pangong have patchy to no coverage, and there is no signal across the high passes. We suggest treating the remote stretches as a welcome digital pause and letting family know to expect quiet spells.

This is an overland journey rather than a trek, so no mountaineering fitness is required, but it does involve long days on winding mountain roads and extended time at high altitude. Reasonable general health, the ability to walk short distances and climb monastery steps, and a tolerance for early starts will serve you well. Travellers of most ages enjoy it comfortably, provided they acclimatise sensibly and pace themselves.
