Kashmir Valley Delight
Overview
There is a reason the vale of Kashmir has been called paradise on earth for centuries. Cradled between the Pir Panjal and the greater Himalaya, it is a land of mirror-still lakes and drifting shikaras, of chinar-shaded gardens laid by Mughal emperors, of saffron fields that blush violet each autumn and meadows that climb from wildflower to snowline in a single afternoon. To travel here is to move slowly through colour and light, from the lacquered houseboats of Dal Lake to the pine ridges where the air turns cool and resinous.
Over six unhurried days this journey traces the classic circuit of the valley. You begin in Srinagar among the terraced Mughal gardens and the waterways of the old city, then rise to Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, where one of the world's highest cable cars lifts you toward distant views of Nanga Parbat. From the saffron town of Pampore and the weathered ruins of Awantipora you continue to Pahalgam, where the Lidder river runs green and fast between Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari. A day in Sonmarg, the meadow of gold, brings you to the edge of the Thajiwas glacier before you return to Srinagar to walk among its revered shrines and the workshops of its craftspeople.
Throughout, you travel by private vehicle with an experienced driver, rest in carefully chosen houseboats and hotels, and are accompanied by guides who know the valley's history, its sacred sites and its quiet corners. It is a gentle, restorative introduction to Kashmir — scenic rather than strenuous — with the shrines of Shankaracharya, Hazratbal and the grand Jamia Masjid woven naturally into the days for those who wish to pause and reflect.

Frequently Asked Questions
The valley itself sits at a comfortable 1,585 metres and most of the tour stays at gentle elevations, so altitude sickness is uncommon. The higher points — the Gulmarg gondola's upper station near 4,000 metres and the Thajiwas glacier at Sonmarg — are reached only briefly, and a slow pace, warm layers and plenty of water are usually all that is needed. Guests with heart or respiratory conditions should nonetheless consult their doctor before travelling.
For Indian nationals no special permit is needed for the classic valley circuit of Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg; a government-issued photo identity card is sufficient and useful at checkpoints. Foreign nationals may travel freely to these destinations but should carry their passport and register where asked. We advise all guests to review the latest travel advisories shortly before departure.
Each season has its own character. Spring, from March to May, brings blossom and the famous tulips; summer, June to August, is green and mild and ideal for the meadows; autumn, September to November, turns the chinars to gold and coincides with the saffron harvest at Pampore. Winter blankets Gulmarg in snow for skiing. This itinerary rewards travellers year-round, though a few higher roads may be affected by heavy snow in deep winter.
Postpaid Indian mobile connections work across most of the valley, with the strongest signal in Srinagar and patchier coverage in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg. Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir may not function here, so we suggest carrying a postpaid number. Houseboats and hotels in Srinagar generally offer Wi-Fi, though it can be slow in the remoter meadows.
This is a scenic, comfortable journey rather than a strenuous trek, and most sightseeing involves short, easy walks. A basic level of fitness is enough to enjoy the gardens, meadows and glacier viewpoints, where optional pony rides ease any longer stretches. Guests of all ages, including families with children and older travellers, are well suited to this itinerary.
