Leh Monastery & Sham Valley Explorer
Overview
Ladakh greets you with thin, luminous air and a stillness that feels older than the mountains themselves. At around 3,500 metres, Leh sits in a high cold desert where whitewashed gompas cling to ochre ridges, strings of prayer flags shiver above the Indus, and the light falls with a clarity found nowhere else in India. This four-day journey is shaped for travellers with only a few days to spare, yet who wish to touch the spiritual and scenic essence of the region without the strain of a longer expedition.
From a comfortable base in Leh, you will trace the great monasteries of the Indus Valley — the gilded halls of Shey and Thiksey, whose twelve tiers rise like a miniature Potala, the vast courtyards of Hemis, seat of the sage Naropa, and the quiet perch of Stakna above the river. A second day carries you west into the Sham Valley, past the gurudwara at Pathar Sahib, the curious slopes of Magnetic Hill, the meeting of the Indus and Zanskar at Sangam, and the eleventh-century murals of Alchi, with the ruined citadel of Basgo and the lunar folds of Lamayuru within reach.
Throughout, the pace is measured and the logistics quietly handled — a private vehicle, a driver who knows every bend of these roads, and a gentle acclimatisation day built in from the start, so that the heights are met with ease rather than haste.

Frequently Asked Questions
At around 3,500 metres the air holds far less oxygen, so mild breathlessness, a light headache or disturbed sleep on the first day are common. This is exactly why Day 1 is kept as a rest day, allowing your body to adjust before any real activity. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and exertion at first, and our vehicles carry oxygen and a first-aid kit as a precaution. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should consult their doctor before travelling.
The core monastery circuit around Leh needs no special permit, but the Sham Valley areas towards Sangam and Alchi fall under Inner Line Permit and environmental-fee regulations. We arrange these permits for you and simply require a scanned copy of your passport or Aadhaar and a passport-size photograph in advance. Foreign nationals should share their passport details at the time of booking.
The season runs broadly from May to September, when the roads are open and the monasteries fully accessible. May to June offer crisp, clear days and blossoming valleys, while September brings golden light and thinner crowds. July and August are warmer and greener but can see occasional road disruption after rain in the surrounding ranges.
Only postpaid SIM cards work in Ladakh, as prepaid connections are not permitted in the region, and BSNL and Jio give the most dependable coverage. Signal is fair within Leh town but becomes patchy in the Sham Valley and around remote monasteries. Wi-Fi is available at most hotels, though it can be slow, so we suggest treating these days as a welcome pause from constant connectivity.
This is a gently paced, vehicle-based journey rather than a trek, so it suits most reasonably healthy travellers, including families with older children. You will do short walks and some stair climbing at monasteries such as Thiksey and Leh Palace, all of it optional and at your own pace. The main consideration is the altitude rather than physical difficulty, which our acclimatisation day is designed to ease.
