Leh–Nubra–Pangong SUV Tour

6 Days / 5 NightsLadakh2-12 persons

Overview

There is a moment, somewhere above the tree line, when the mind falls quiet and the mountains do the speaking. Ladakh is a land of that stillness — a high desert of ochre ridges, prayer flags snapping in a thin wind, and monasteries clinging to cliffs as though grown from the rock itself. This six-day loop is the classic Ladakh circuit, unhurried and generous, tracing the region's most storied roads in the comfort of a private SUV with a driver who knows every hairpin.

From your base at Leh, roughly 3,500 metres above the plains, the journey climbs over Khardung La — among the highest motorable passes on earth at some 5,359 metres — into the twin river valley of Nubra, where cold-desert dunes meet double-humped Bactrian camels and the giant Maitreya Buddha keeps watch over Diskit. It carries on along the Shyok to Pangong Tso, the border lake at about 4,350 metres that turns from turquoise to indigo as the day moves across it, before returning to Leh over Chang La past the terraced monastery of Thiksey and the schoolyard made famous by a much-loved film.

We build the itinerary around your body's need to acclimatise, opening with a full day of rest and pacing the altitude gains sensibly thereafter. Inner Line Permits, monastery coordination, oxygen support and first-aid are handled quietly in the background, so that all you need carry is a sense of wonder.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every day is thoughtfully planned to balance spiritual depth with comfortable pacing.

Land at Leh (approx 3,500 m / 11,500 ft) and give the day entirely to rest, letting your body adjust gently to the thin mountain air before the circuit begins.

  • Warm welcome and pickup at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport
  • Transfer to your hotel and unhurried check-in
  • Complete rest for the afternoon — sip water often, move slowly, avoid exertion
  • Optional gentle evening stroll to the hilltop Shanti Stupa for a first sweep of the Indus valley at dusk
  • A quiet wander through Leh's main bazaar for handicrafts, pashmina and apricot preserves
  • Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Leh

A relaxed day exploring Leh and its surrounds, easing further into the altitude while taking in war memorials, a revered gurudwara, and the region's celebrated optical curiosities.

  • Visit the Hall of Fame war museum honouring the soldiers of the Indian Army
  • Pause in reverence at Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, tended by the armed forces
  • Experience Magnetic Hill, where the slope plays its famous optical illusion on parked vehicles
  • Stop at Sangam, the meeting of the jade Indus and the greener Zanskar rivers
  • Explore the nine-storey Leh Palace with its views over the old town
  • Return to Shanti Stupa for an unhurried second visit if time and energy allow
  • Dinner and overnight in Leh

Cross Khardung La (approx 5,359 m / 17,582 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in the world, and descend roughly 120 km into the cold desert of Nubra.

  • Early departure from Leh with a photo halt at the summit of Khardung La
  • Descend through raw, high-desert scenery into the Nubra valley
  • Visit Diskit Monastery and stand beneath the towering 32-metre Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley
  • Reach the silver-grey sand dunes of Hunder in the afternoon
  • Enjoy a ride on the rare double-humped Bactrian camels among the dunes
  • Settle in as the desert cools and the peaks turn gold at sunset
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Nubra

Follow the Shyok river road for roughly 160 km to Pangong Tso (approx 4,350 m), the high lake straddling the India-China border and renowned for shifting colour through the day.

  • Morning drive tracing the braided Shyok river through remote hamlets and gorges
  • Cross rugged, sparsely peopled terrain with frequent photo stops
  • First glimpse of Pangong's astonishing blue as the lake opens before you
  • Walk the pebbled shoreline as the water turns from turquoise to deep indigo
  • Watch the light play across the far Tibetan ranges at golden hour
  • Dinner and overnight in lakeside camps beside Pangong Tso

Return to Leh over Chang La (approx 5,360 m / 17,590 ft), pausing at some of the Indus valley's most beautiful monasteries and heritage sites en route across roughly 220 km.

  • Rise early for the mountain light on Pangong before departing
  • Ascend and cross the high Chang La pass with a brief summit halt
  • Visit Thiksey Monastery, whose tiered terraces echo Lhasa's Potala Palace
  • Explore the historic Shey Palace, the old royal seat above the Indus
  • Stop at the Druk Padma Karpo (Rancho) School, familiar from the film '3 Idiots'
  • Arrive Leh by evening for a warm meal and rest
  • Dinner and overnight in Leh

After breakfast, a timely transfer to the airport as the circuit comes gently to a close.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ladakh sits above 3,500 metres, and the tour is deliberately built with a full rest day on arrival before any high passes. Drink water frequently, avoid alcohol and strenuous activity for the first two days, and let your body set the pace. We carry an oxygen cylinder and first-aid kit in the vehicle, and mild acute mountain sickness usually eases with rest. Anyone with a heart or respiratory condition should consult a doctor before travelling.

Yes. Nubra, Pangong and the border valleys fall in restricted areas that require an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange for you as part of the tour. Please carry an original government photo ID and share a scanned copy at booking. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit instead, so do let us know your nationality when you reserve.

The circuit runs most reliably from May to September, when the high passes of Khardung La and Chang La are open and the roads are at their best. June to August brings the warmest days and the clearest lake colours at Pangong, while May and September are quieter and cooler. The passes can close briefly after snowfall, so we keep the itinerary flexible for safety.

Only postpaid connections work in Ladakh, and prepaid SIMs do not function here; among networks, Jio, Airtel and BSNL postpaid are the most dependable in and around Leh. Signal fades considerably in Nubra and is largely absent at Pangong, so treat these stretches as a welcome digital pause. We recommend informing family of the quiet zones before you set out.

This is a scenic road journey rather than a trek, so no special fitness is required and most of your time is spent in a comfortable vehicle. That said, the long drives, winding roads and thin air can be tiring, and short walks at viewpoints and monasteries do involve some gentle climbing. A reasonable level of general health and a willingness to acclimatise slowly are all that is needed.
